Indian agriculture officials come to IRRI for discovery visit

Senior officials from India’s Ministry of Agriculture are at IRRI for a two-day (25-26 November 2013) series of awareness and consultation meetings on the Institute’s work and its collaborative projects with the country.

The agriculture officials, who represent various Indian states, learned particularly about the Stress-Tolerant Rice for Africa and South Asia (STRASA) Project that is coordinated by IRRI in South Asia.

The group toured the International Rice Genebank and other facilities and met with various groups and discussed IRRI's research on stress-tolerant rice varieties and their dissemination in India, developing and spreading good management practices, the crop manager for mobile phones, and several other aspects of the long-standing collaboration between India and the Institute.

The officials on this trip are Sanjay Lohiya, joint secretary for crops and director of the National Food Security Mission of the Ministry of Agriculture; Debasish Panda and Subrata Biswas, principal secretaries of agriculture for the governments of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, respectively; and P.R. Kridutta, director of agriculture for the Government of Chhattisgarh.

Their visit was arranged under the STRASA Project.
